Graffiti are the graphics contain images or letters applied without permission to publicly viewable surfaces such as walls or bridges. Dated back to the days of such ancient civilizations such as Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire, Graffiti has existed and changed over time into what are known as "modern graffiti": the public defacing of a surface using spray paint, markers, or other materials. Graffiti can be used to communicate social and political messages, and as a form of advertising.(wikipedia, 2006)
In my opinion, Graffiti is a modern design form since it not only expressing the personality of its creator but also trying to communicate, exchange the point of view through a very attractive and impressive look.
Somehow, the Graffiti movement affects the modern design trend, inspire the graphic designers with a "street", dynamic, colorful but also aesthetic style. We can easily recognize an art work inspired by Graffiti or its ideas by a "messy" pattern with "free", not deliberately placed details.
As a matter of fact, Graffiti has become an international trend as it's spreading out through the youth with the concept of "freedom", stylish and youthful. However, the Graffiti trend around the world has only grown up primarily in western style since it requiring a lot of effort in seriously researching and studying to distinguish Graffiti with just some kind of unusual drawing techniques. As a result of that, in order to create a Vietnamese themed form of graffiti art would take a lot of work so that it would not be considered as an imitation of Western style graffiti.
